If the wood is already so badly damaged, splintered, or has larger imperfections that a restoration of the existing wood is no longer possible, I have a company in my network that completely renews the wooden rim. This involves even greater effort, but allows an original Fiat Dino steering wheel to be transformed back into a "like new" condition.
