The wing nuts are not just decorative pieces but tools. The wings are designed to be loosened and tightened with a hammer (originally made of lead) to apply the necessary high torque. Over the years, the wings suffer, the chrome flakes off, and the material deforms. Sometimes, a hammer blow misses. However, the wing nuts can be restored. This involves dechroming and then grinding them to straighten out the deformations. The almost exact original shape can be approximated, with the corners of the wings usually becoming slightly rounded (see photo of a restored and mounted wing nut), larger nicks can be ground down but may still be visible up close afterwards. Subsequently, the wing nut is ground, re-chromed, and polished. For chroming, a 4mm hole must be drilled for hanging, which is no longer visible when the wing nut is mounted. Any existing emblem in the center must be removed and will be sent back loose. Upon request, a new Fiat emblem can be inserted for an additional charge of 50 Euros (high-quality reproduction, see photo of a restored and mounted wing nut).
