Overhauling the Fiat Dino (ZF Gemmer) steering gear: cleaning, dismantling, assembly, and adjustment. The standard scope includes dismantling, cleaning inside and out, replacing oil seals and paper gaskets, refilling with oil, and reassembling with a new locking plate. The bearing preload and steering play are adjusted according to factory specifications. If it turns out that the steering worm, steering roller, or the ball or needle bearings are damaged, a case-by-case discussion will determine how to proceed, i.e., whether the damage can be repaired and what additional costs would be incurred. Unfortunately, spare parts for the steering gear are difficult or almost impossible to obtain; repairs are sometimes possible. However, often a thorough cleaning of the internal components, an oil change, careful assembly, and correct adjustment already lead to a significant improvement in steering feel.
