Rechroming of parts
Rechroming of parts
For several years now, I have been working with an expert in her field to re-chrome various components of my Fiat Dinos. The parts are cleaned and de-chromed, and only then does it become clear whether there are any damages such as holes, etc., that need to be repaired, i.e., welded, soldered, etc. Afterwards, they are ground, nickel-plated, copper-plated, and chromed, with repeated grinding and polishing in between, and a final polish at the end. The effort involved naturally depends on the individual workpiece(s), their size, shape, and condition.
As an example, I can mention the windshield frame of the Fiat Dino Spider. I thoroughly cleaned it so that no traces of sealant or similar remained (in my case, this involved a lot of manual work, but I also have a blasting facility with a sufficiently large cabin in my network, although this does not work with soft sealant - however, removing rust in the corners worked wonderfully). The window frame had no holes, etc., and I decided to leave a few minor traces of stone chips as they were minimal. The cost for re-chroming (excluding the preparatory cleaning work) in such a case is roughly 600 - 800 Euros. For smaller components, such as the rear license plate light, the estimated cost is approximately 100 Euros.
Here is a selection of parts that I have already refurbished in this way:
- Windshield frame
- Center lock nuts
- Hubcaps
- Bumpers
- Emblems
- Wheel bolts
- Trim strips
